Concrete has been used in countertop applications for hundreds of years. In some cases in Europe, concrete countertops that are 300 years old are still being used today. Interior designers and and homeowners with the desire for "something different" love concrete tops. When done properly, and maintained properly, home owners swear by them. The counters imperfections are what makes them unique. The older the counter top the more character and beauty it has.
There are two ways of constructing a concrete countertop. the first way is " off site upside down " this technique is done mostly by companies that manufacture countertops to order and in mass numbers. Many 'do it yourselfers' from reading the book by Fu Tung Cheng. The second way to construct a concrete countertop is " in place " Rob does all of his tops in place. Rob feels In place construction is more of an art form. No mistakes can be made with sizing as the forms are constructed right on top of existing cabinet boxes. A two inch top is preferred. Again, through creativity and immagination possibilities are endless.
Integeral and acid/dye tops are both possibilities, but depending on the application its all a matter of personal choice. Selection of the most suitable sealer will be the most important
decision one can make as the location of the countertop will determine whether you have a water based penetrating sealer or a top coat acrylic type sealer.
